Fortress Mountain Dogsled Experience

Winter Tours

High-alpine dog sledding on a private, movie-set mountain.

2.5 – 3 Hour Tour

Ride a shuttle up the Fortress Mountain access road to a quiet trailhead in the old ski area. From there, transfer by all-terrain vehicle to the start of the dogsled section, meet the dogs, and learn the basics before helping harness and set up (if you’d like). Then mush through a brand-new, exclusive trail in a snowy cirque with big-peak views — a secluded, high-elevation outing you won’t find anywhere else in Banff/Canmore.

What’s Included

  • Shuttle from the base of the access road to the trailhead (≈10 minutes)
  • Short ATV transfer to the dogsled start
  • Guide briefing, meet-the-dogs, optional help with harnessing
  • Guided dogsled tour on a private, newly built trail at Fortress Mountain

Trip Details:

  • Location: Historic Fortress Mountain ski area, Kananaskis (near Canmore/Banff)
  • Format: Small groups; quiet, high-alpine terrain
  • Timing: Allow roughly 2.5–3 hours including transfers and trail time
  • Good to Know: Elevated alpine setting = typically excellent snow and sweeping valley views; dress for colder, windier conditions.

Driving Directions:

The parking area is accessible only by vehicle (no public transport). You drive to Fortress Mountain access road, then take a ~10 min shuttle from base of the access road up to the trailhead, then an ATV transfer to the sled start.

Approximate travel times given: ~45 mins from Canmore; ~1h 10 from Banff; ~1h 20 from Calgary.

Why We Love It:

It’s dogsledding with a backstage pass: private access, lofty elevation, and that “nobody else is around” feeling.

The transfers add a sense of expedition, and the scenery delivers in every direction.
